Hearing single photons

We have a little setup where you can “hear” nearly every photon that is arriving at a single-photon detector - with this you can get a hands-on feeling how little light a single photon is!

This related poster contains some figures about light and photons: download

Single photon human vision?

This experiment is ideally suited to discuss the basics of quantum mechanics, for more see the nice articles linked on Single photon human vision.

The value of fundamental research

2026: Physics is driving Europe’s economy

2025: (Fundamental) research and education is in jeopardy in the Netherlands - at NWO Physics 2025 we have organized a focus session “The value of fundamental research”, here is the poster. Many thanks to Dietmar Harhoff and Liedewij Laan for the exciting presentations, and many thanks to all of you for participating in the session - it was a great to see such a large crowd and interest in the topic!

Here are the slides of the presentations, many thanks to Liedewij and Dietmar for providing them!
